What is EMDR?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a powerful, evidence-based psychotherapy treatment that supports people in healing from emotional distress.
Through a combination of talking, memory recall, and bilateral stimulation (usually eye movements, sounds/music, or tapping), EMDR helps your brain safely process past memories or experiences so they lose their emotional charge.
EMDR may be a good fit for you if:

Trauma can interrupt the brain’s natural healing process, which can keep people stuck in responses such as fight, flight, or freeze.
How does it work?
EMDR assists the brain in healing from difficult experiences that may feel “stuck” in the nervous system (often stored through implicit memory).
These memories are often stored as fragments (images, thoughts, sounds, physical sensations) with highly charged emotions that can continue to trigger reactions long after the event has passed.
Through EMDR processing, distressing memories are reactivated and paired with bilateral stimulation, helping the brain reprocess the experience (similar to how memories are processed during REM sleep).
fMRI and EEG studies show that bilateral stimulation can create neurological changes in the brain—reducing amygdala activity (associated with fear and emotional arousal) and increasing prefrontal cortex activation (associated with cognitive control; Pagani et al., 2012).
